The Dark Side of Memory Lane
As we got closer to Srebrenica, images of the war and massacre resurfaced in my memory. Just a teenager at that time, those memories of suffering and desolation caught on television had deeply affected me.
I was there seeking to understand why. Around us, there was nothing left of the village, except a huge cemetery. My mind still could not understand that such events had lasted for four years and five months before the 21st century. Furthermore it had happened in Europe! How could 400 Dutch soldiers present on-site not attempted to prevent the genocide? Powerless and unable to find an explanation, I sat watching families and passersby lay flowers on the graves of the victims. It was a sad image.
Back to Sarajevo to meet the city and its people, and thoughts of fear and war seemed to tuck themselves away. Life goes on.

Did you know...
- The fact is, it is a monumental pyramid in Visoko near Sarajevo. The only one in Europe for now. Without a doubt, it is an object that will become the most important symbol of this European region since the beginning of civilizations.
- Perucica is the largest preserved rainforest in Europe, it is protect by law and locate within the Sutjeska National Park.
- Stari Most (English: Old Bridge) is a 16th century Ottoman bridge in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina that crosses the river Neretva and connects two parts of the city. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, until it was destroyed on November 9, 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War.
- The Turks constructed towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina in traditional Middle Eastern
pattern, consisting of two districts: commercial quarters (bazaars) and residential quarters (mahalas). Today, city planners still follow this pattern.
