The power and magnificence of nature often confront man’s helplessness and futile efforts against the universe. And maybe this is just what we need.

I found myself standing in front of a volcano spitting its fire whenever it wanted, and roaring to life during quiet times. The suspense was worthy of the greatest thrillers, and human survival was insignificant in the face of this supremacy.

What else could garner such fear and great respect?

My humble little self has lost touch with what had once bounded man to his environment. At that instant, I tried to meditate on the energy from this place.

That night, while I contemplated the complexities of man’s existence with bright eyes from the phenomenon I had the honor to witness, I fell asleep, exhausted.

- The British and French, who settled the New Hebrides in the 19th century, agreed in 1906 to an Anglo-French Condominium, which administered the islands until independence in 1980, when the new name of Vanuatu was adopted.
- Vanuatu is an archipelago consisting of approximately 82 islands which are of volcanic origin.
- Multiple waves of colonizers, each speaking a distinct language, migrated to the New Hebrides in the millennia preceding European exploration in the 18th century.
